The most remarkable thing about John Leslie's virtual alchemy formula for erotica is his mastery of the moment - his sex scenes seem to glide from a glance to a touch to an invasion, never losing sight of the sparks which supposedly attracted the performers in the first place. In Dirty Tricks 1, Leslie concentrates on sexual blackmail. The scenes are all constructed with an artistic understanding of the obsessions that make the characters the physically-addicted animals that they are. The Dirty Tricks concept invites us to imagine the lives of the characters we see, and then to become the one which we find most stimulating (not necessarily the most appropriate). A minimum of dialogue only adds to the intrigue of the set-ups, which all begin with the meeting of a man and a woman who admittedly have nothing in common other than their sexual cravings. Leslie refuses to allow the easy way out, and colors the performers with just enough personality to make us feel unusually conected to their urges and thoughts. Redheaded vixen Ariel Daye and platinum slut Candy Apples are two housewives who become fascinated while watching deeply-tanned Jake Steed play basketball. Steed nonchalantly inquires whether either of the two ladies have ever been fucked up the ass, setting the scene for an outdoors anal sausage-burying. Ariel's asshole practically devours Steed's massive organ, and Candy receives the same treatment while on all fours. Steed laughs at the ladies' overwhelming appreciation of his dick up their butt cavities, only to fall victim to his own vulnerability as he calls after the departing femmes "see you soon?" almost begging for another taste of their company (and, of course, their awesomely tight rear ends). Vouyer seems to take immense pleasure in Kim's activities, who, in keeping with the theme set forth in the previous segments, gives Vouyer Vouuyer his due by ignoring him in favour of the more substantially endowed Marcus. Despite what may have been a degrading trick on the part of Vouyer, Kim clearly holds all the aces in the strange but consuming battle for sexual control. Dirty Tricks may be a bit too moody for couples' fare, but if a woman has already been introduced to the variances of adult entertainment, this tape could be just the thing to initiate a conversation about the more enigmatic aspects of human desire. And as we all know, conversations lead to friendships, and friendships can often blossom into bliss.
